I was very frustrated and depressed a month ago. The main cause is that my profession is not flexible enough to find jobs in the country. I hate engineering, I hate my Ph.D., I hate my ex-advisor, I hate myself by not thinking too much about the future when I was at UT while others were taking statistics and accounting classes. Now it's too late to change.
But as TT said, our major is one of the hotest, why would we question it while others are desparate to get in? Checked with a colleague here with a CS major and he said he didn't think about it too much either when he was in school. Meanwhile, my cousin does think about the future a lot, major, job, etc. I don't think she is any smarter than me, just the younger Chinese generation are more practical in this competent market. For me, I thought I will find a job any way and didn't think about the demographic flexibility.
I think I did a good job planning after I started working. GC, career development plan, etc. If I could turn back time, I may get a Ph.D. in statistics instead considering the wide range of applications. I have the mathematics it takes!
